You might be surprised to know that I don’t eat hummus anymore. Three years ago, when I started changing transitioning myself and my family to a Clean Eating lifestyle, I started figuring out that many of our old habits needed to be revamped (duh!!!) At the time I was a HUGE fan of Ruffle’s Potato Chips and French Onion Dip and while I usually only bought them during College Football season or for the Super Bowl Party we had each year, I could easily polish off an entire bag and jar myself! When I starting changing the foods I bought, #Ruffles and dip were some of the first things to go. I started putting out veggie and fruit platters, but I still felt like I needed something to go with pretzels or carrots, so I switched to Hummus. I knew Hummus was made from chickpeas, I knew that it was a source of protein and I knew that it was a staple in my vegetarian and vegan friend’s diets. What I didn’t stop to consider, was that it was also a source of fat. Fat is not a bad thing of course, fat does not make you fat, but when you consider that 2 Tbsp. of Hummus is one serving and that the calories from fat in that one serving is more than HALF its total caloric value, you might as well break out the french onion dip…they have the SAME AMOUNT OF FAT in them!!! and unless you’re making your own, the oils used in your favorite store bought brand may not be the healthy ones. A single 2 TABLESPOON serving of hummus gives you 5g Fat and 2 g of Protein. During training, I keep my fat intake between 30-45g per day. I could easily eat 6 servings (3/4 C) of hummus and blow my entire fat intake for the day on it. Considering I’m not vegetarian, that’s not where I want to put all my fat calories…especially since I’d only get 2g of Protein per serving for my indulgence. So, what’s the better option? #Knudsen low fat cottage cheese has 5 g of fat for a SIX OUNCE serving and delivers a whopping 16g of Protein! #Fage 0% Fat Greek Yogurt gives you a 0 g of fat for an EIGHT OUNCE serving and provides 23 g of Protein!!! For those of you who are still going to eat hummus, no matter what, I have this to say, “Life is about choices.” Whatever you CHOOSE is your decision, but if you’re anything like I was in the beginning, the obvious sometimes eludes us. #nowyouknow #eatclean #eatsmart #livelovenourish #sweatpink
