I first met Mickey 2 years ago when preparing to compete for my first competition and was immediately struck by two things: her amazing physique and her electric personality! Since that day I’ve gotten to know her better through facebook and her business page RhythMick Fitness, Nutrition & Skin Care and I am still in awe. One of the many things that I’ve learned in the course of the past few years is that everyone has a story. We all have a history that is unique–and fitness, as in life, shapes us differently. Some people struggle with health issues, obesity, poor self/body image, eating disorders, the list goes on. The common thread is the empowerment that good health and nutrition can afford anyone! Although it is often perceived in a negative light, health and fitness is not so much about a person’s outer transformation as much as it as about their inner transformation. Mickey’s story is a beautiful example.
25 YEARS AGO TODAY! I competed and won the 1989 NPC California State Bodybuilding Championships. (HUGE turning point in my Bodybuilding Career and Life!) The next day…photo shoot for FLEX Magazine and video shoot for ESPN. (Flashback! Feelin’ the butterflies and excitement all over.)
I take pause today to give credit to Bodybuilding as the foundation for my recovery from Anorexia, for a priceless education in body transformation, mental toughness & visualization, self-improvement & confidence, friendly & healthy competition; for my deep knowledge & insatiable passion for fitness, nutrition, supplementation & age-defiance; for my life’s purpose and profession; and for showing me that we really can achieve what our minds can conceive and believe.
Today… I am reminded of the strong-willed, free-spirited & determined woman I was 25 years ago. I’m reminded of the courage I had to set such a big goal to not just compete, but to WIN! I am reminded of the unwavering commitment I had to ALL the daily habits necessary to accomplish this lofty goal, and of the excitement I felt engaging in every one of them. I’m reminded of the laser focus I had in my training and the attention to detail in my diet, posing and stage prep. I am reminded of the mental strength I had, never doubted, never entertained even one negative thought or judgment. I’m reminded of how poised and ready I felt as I walked out on stage to present my physique to the judges and my routine for the audience. Today, as I relive all this in my mind, I am so inspired by the person I was, and gratefully reminded that she still lives in me. #MSCAL89
